9 May 2019, Leeds, UK. Leading immersive technology studio Cooperative Innovations today announces that it has licensed award-winning co-op party game Spaceteam from its creator Henry Smith of Sleeping Beast Games. The license allows the company to recreate the game on a variety of platforms, and it is already working on a VR version for both VR arcades and consumers at home.

Spaceteam was originally released on mobile in 2012 and became an almost instant indie hit, picking up awards and recognition at a range of global indie games events, including IndieCade, A MAZE, International Mobile Gaming Awards, and PAX East Indie Showcase. The game is a cooperative party game for 2-8 players where each player works with their teammates to control randomly assigned spaceship control panels and follow time-sensitive instructions before their ship explodes!

The game has continued to sell well over many years, with over 8 million downloads since launch, and has also spawned a successful card game variant. The partnership with Cooperative Innovations now brings a VR component to the franchise and CEO & Founder Simon Barratt is enthusiastic about the potential: “We’ve always loved the energy, collaboration and communication that Spaceteam creates and it’s a perfect fit for our vision of VR and AR as social, collaborative technologies. The game is already a lot of fun to play and we’re looking forward to getting it into alpha testers’ hands soon.”

Original developer Henry Smith is also excited about the deal: “It’s been great to see what Cooperative Innovations have already done with Spaceteam. The game is about being right in the action on the bridge of a spaceship with your friends, so VR is going to add an exciting new dimension! ”

Spaceteam for VR is due for release later in 2019 and interested parties can register to receive updates for more information at

Cooperative Innovations is an immersive technology studio, committed to empowering creators and consumers to share the future of interactive experiences. Founded in 2016, the company has collaborated with a number of organisations (including Framestore, the BBC and Phoenix Dance Theatre) to create a variety of immersive experiences and technologies. Underpinning all these projects is the studio’s licensable technology including Ikabod – a system allowing VR and AR avatars to accurately reflect the physicality of players in the real world. The studio has also been developing its own original MMORPG VR game, Raiders of Erda, and Spaceteam VR.

Hi, I’m Henry. In 2012 I quit my job as a programmer at BioWare to spend a year making my own indie games. My first game was Spaceteam, which took me on lots of fun adventures, and now I’m working on a procedurally-generated multiplayer escape room called Blabyrinth.
